The Museum of Jurassic Technology periodically hosts musical performances, lectures, and other special events. The first such program of the New Year was just announced, and it will feature Romanian music performed on fiddle and accordion by Lulu Starr and Josh Petrojvic.
Given the breadth, dynamism and creativity of the Los Angeles arts scene, it sometimes seems strange when the city, or some organization, designates a particular period of time as “art month” or “art weekend”. Isn’t every week art week in LA? The sheer variety of arts related events taking place in and around the city during any given week sure makes it feel that way to me.
This weekend, the Tim Burton exhibition at LACMA comes to a close. To help usher out this fantastic show in true Burton style, the museum is screening six of Vincent Price’s ghoulish classics back-to-back in honor of his centenary.
During the month of October, Angelenos of all ages and artistic ability are encouraged to participate in The Big Draw LA, a city-wide celebration of drawing in all its forms. Inspired by the popular Big Draw event in London, The Big Draw LA seeks to expand the boundaries of drawing, experimenting not only with pencils, paint, charcoal, and digital imagery, but also with sand, clay, choreographed movement—anything that makes a mark!
The World Festival of Sacred Music is back with another eclectic program of music and dance performances that highlight the diverse range of sacred heritages in Los Angeles. Originally inspired by the Dalai Lama’s call for a festival of music on every continent to celebrate the dawn of the new millennia, this two-week series takes place once every three years and seeks to provide “…opportunities for people to come together and investigate issues of tolerance and diversity within our complex, urban environment,” according to Judy Mitoma, Festival Director.
As LA Times Art Critic Christopher Knight pointed out in a recent article, “…retrospective knowledge [of the early years of post-World War II art in Los Angeles] is broad but shallow, a surface barely scratched.” Recognizing the dearth of knowledge and understanding of this formative period in the city’s cultural development, the Getty Foundation and the Getty Research Institute set out to uncover, document and reclaim the historical record of art in Southern California.
Today the Los Angeles Times published two interesting articles about Case Study House No. 8, more commonly known as the Eames house. Completed in 1949 by Charles and Ray Eames, the landmark Pacific Palisades house is an icon of modern design and a favorite building of mine in Los Angeles.
