Free Lunch-Hour Chamber Music Concerts at UCLA

The UCLA Center for 17th- & 18th-Century Studies is once again co-sponsoring the Henry J. Bruman Summer Chamber Music Festival. Held over a two-week period beginning next week, the festival will feature members of the iPalpiti Soloists and the Armadillo String Quartet in four free concerts at UCLA.

Every year on June 21st, the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere, people in 460 cities in 110 countries celebrate music and community through a series of free, outdoor concerts and performances. These international events are based on and inspired by France’s Fête de la Musique, a national music festival inaugurated in 1982 by the French Ministry of Culture.

It’s not often I attend the same event in different cities, but that’s exactly what I did earlier this year. In January, I transformed myself into an Edwardian cowboy of sorts and participated in the Edwardian World’s Faire and the Edwardian Ball, held on consecutive nights at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco. The following month, I donned my costume again and took part in the Edwardian Ball Los Angeles, which combined many elements of the two Bay Area events into a single night of fun, fashion, music, theater, dancing and more.
Los Angeles Plays Host to the Piatigorsky International Cello Festival

In a few days Los Angeles will host the inaugural Piatigorsky International Cello Festival, organized by the USC Thornton School of Music and the LA Phil, in partnership with The Colburn School and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. This unique event is a celebration of the legendary cellist Gregor Piatigorsky (1903 – 1976), who settled in Los Angeles during the final years of this life. It’s also a gathering of 22 of the world’s top cellists, who will come together for a series of chamber music performances, orchestral concerts, master classes and interactive events.
