ObscuraDay2012_Badge

What’s Obscura Day you ask? It’s an international celebration of unusual places organized by Atlas Obscura that takes you on expeditions, back room tours and explorations of the hidden wonders in your own hometown. Here in Los Angeles you can participate in a number of interesting outings, such as:

“Play Me, I’m Yours” Los Angeles!

It’s always fun coming across people playing music when and where you least expect it. Whether at a park, the beach, a street corner or some other location, music enlivens a space and brings people together. For those with the talent and inclination, it’s also a pleasure to spontaneously create music and share it with others.

Last Remaining Seats – Classic Films in Historic Theaters

Today the LA Conservancy begins selling tickets to its members for the 26th Annual installment of Last Remaining Seats (LRS), the hugely popular festival that brings classic films and live entertainment to historic theaters in the LA area. I’ve attended this event in the past and always had a great time. Not only do you have the opportunity to watch wonderful films on the big screen, but you’ll experience them in some of the most beautiful movie palaces ever built in this country.

The Los Angeles Zoo’s latest exhibit, The LAIR, opens to the general public today. Visitors can expect to see over 60 species of living amphibians, invertebrates, and reptiles (hence the name LAIR) from around the world housed in six themed exhibit areas that include habitats for a wide variety of unique and endangered species.

BWP_EcoCampusEntrance

This weekend Burbank Water and Power (BWP) will host a community celebration and dedication ceremony to mark the completion of California’s first comprehensive, sustainable utility campus. Working with Los Angeles-based landscape architecture firm AHBE, BWP has transformed the facility from an aging industrial site into a state-of-the-art regenerative green space and a model for other public and private entities around the nation.

Art Weekend Los Angeles

ArtWeekendLA-logo

Given the breadth, dynamism and creativity of the Los Angeles arts scene, it sometimes seems strange when the city, or some organization, designates a particular period of time as “art month” or “art weekend”. Isn’t every week art week in LA? The sheer variety of arts related events taking place in and around the city during any given week sure makes it feel that way to me.
