My family loves the REDCAT International Children’s Film Festival. The selection of shorts is always excellent, the audience’s energy and enthusiasm is infectious and the theater offers an intimate place to immerse yourself in wonderful stories from around the world.
I highly recommend you attend one or more screenings during the festival’s two-weekend run. If the films are anything like the ones I’ve seen in the past, you won’t be disappointed.
National Park Week is Almost Here – It’s Time to Get Outdoors and Explore!

There are 397 national parks in the United States, which together consist of 84 million acres of spectacular scenery, historic landmarks and cultural treasures. Twenty-six of these parks are located in California and of those, five are in the southern part of the state.
Starting tomorrow, you have the opportunity to experience the beauty of these natural wonders without having to pay the normal park entrance fee. It’s all part of National Park Week, a nationwide celebration organized by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation.

During the month of October, Angelenos of all ages and artistic ability are encouraged to participate in The Big Draw LA, a city-wide celebration of drawing in all its forms. Inspired by the popular Big Draw event in London, The Big Draw LA seeks to expand the boundaries of drawing, experimenting not only with pencils, paint, charcoal, and digital imagery, but also with sand, clay, choreographed movement—anything that makes a mark!
RedCat International Children’s Film Festival is Back!

REDCAT is the downtown outpost of CalArts and bills itself as “a center for experimentation, discovery and lively civic discourse.” Each year, the REDCAT team puts together an eclectic calendar of events that draw upon artistic talent from around the world.
Since it opened in 2003, I’ve enjoyed a number of films, performances, exhibitions and literary events at REDCAT, which is located in the Disney Concert Hall. One of my favorite events has been the family friendly International Children’s Film Festival, due to the quality and breadth of films. Given my past experience with this event, I have a lot of confidence that this year’s festival won’t disappoint.
Sundays for Kids at the Hammer – The Criminal Conspiracy

If your child enjoys crafting a good story, the Hammer Museum and 826LA have a program that is sure to please. Under the guidance of writer Natashia Deón, participants will work collaboratively to create a cast of characters destined to become co-conspirators in the Crime of the Century. Deón is an award-winning screenwriter and practicing attorney. She is currently penning her debut novel, The Spinning Wheel. Ages 8–13.
