During the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, the Skirball Cultural Center hosts its family-friendly program called Last Weekends of the Month. This Saturday and Sunday, you and your family can enjoy screenings of animated shorts from the 1940s and 1950s, inspired by the exhibition Light & Noir: Exiles and Émigrés in Hollywood, 1933–1950. My family loves the REDCAT International Children’s Film Festival. The selection of shorts is always excellent, the audience’s energy and enthusiasm is infectious and the theater offers an intimate place to immerse yourself in wonderful stories from around the world.

I highly recommend you attend one or more screenings during the festival’s two-weekend run. If the films are anything like the ones I’ve seen in the past, you won’t be disappointed.

REDCAT is the downtown outpost of CalArts and bills itself as “a center for experimentation, discovery and lively civic discourse.” Each year, the REDCAT team puts together an eclectic calendar of events that draw upon artistic talent from around the world.

Since it opened in 2003, I’ve enjoyed a number of films, performances, exhibitions and literary events at REDCAT, which is located in the Disney Concert Hall. One of my favorite events has been the family friendly International Children’s Film Festival, due to the quality and breadth of films. Given my past experience with this event, I have a lot of confidence that this year’s festival won’t disappoint.

Demon Hill Tour for Kids at the Hammer

The Hammer Museum runs an excellent children’s program called Hammer Kids, which includes films, art installations and various participatory experiences. This program sounds particularly interesting. Hoeber—early collaborator with Brian De Palma, historian of American social and cultural behavior, tour guide, and amateur magician—will give a tour of the Demon Hill mystery house, an installation […]
