Gone fishin’

Since my two boys are out of school next week for Spring Break, I’m taking some time off to spend with my family. Curating Los Angeles will return the week of April 16th. Happy Spring!

There is no shortage of interesting things to see and do in Los Angeles. That’s one of the many reasons I love the city so much. The challenge is figuring out what’s going on so I can participate in those events and activities that interest me most.

Last week the Orange County Parks Commission voted unanimously to approve a reuse plan for one of the landmark blimp hangars at the former Tustin Marine Corps Air Station. The approved concept plan involves restoring the north hangar and transforming the surrounding 84.5 acres into a regional park that will feature playing fields, tree lined trails, playgrounds and picnic areas. Future uses may also include water polo and ice hockey facilities. Due to its poor condition, the southern hangar is slated for demolition.

After a six-month grassroots public effort, the California State Parks system announced on December 1st that it is removing the Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve from California’s 70-park closure list. The announcement comes just in time for the park’s 30th anniversary next year.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes

No, this isn’t a post about that classic David Bowie track, although it’s a great song. The title captures, in a single word, what my family has experienced this past summer.

Regular readers of my site have undoubtedly noticed that during the past two to three months the number of posts decreased significantly. The reason is that my family and I just moved from Irvine to Berkeley. Between packing, getting our house ready to rent, finding a house to lease, unpacking, updating records, finding new service providers and getting our two kids started at new schools, I’ve had little time to devote to Curating Los Angeles.

Curating Los Angeles Turns One!

It’s hard to believe, but one year ago today I launched Curating Los Angeles. During the past 12 months I’ve been privileged to cover many wonderful events around the greater LA area. I’ve met interesting people who are involved in a wide variety of fields and help make the city such a vibrant place to live and work. Best of all, the site has enabled me to share all of those experiences with you – a community of engaged readers – and to learn from you as well.

The Los Angeles literary scene has been significantly enhanced over the past year due to the efforts of Joe Donnelly and Laurie Ochoa – formerly the deputy editor and editor, respectively, of LA Weekly. Together they have created Slake Los Angeles, a quarterly publication that celebrates the long form approach to journalism and deftly blends fiction, poetry, photography and art into a gorgeous package.
