I love LA Photo Contest & Gallery Exhibition
Calling all photographers!
In early May the Duncan Miller Gallery announced its “I Love LA” photo contest. Now there are only two weeks left to submit your images, so start combing through your image library to find that forgotten gem or get out today and snap the perfect shot.
Telephone – Opening at the Torrance Art Museum
Here’s an interesting concept for an art exhibition. Ask one artist to select another, who in turn is asked to select the next artist, and so on until 40 artists have committed to participate in a group show. It’s sort of like the game Telephone, which is exactly what the Torrance Art Museum (TAM) calls its latest exhibition, set to open this weekend.
Lightning in a Bottle 2011
Once again The Do LaB brings their creative energies to the southern California music and arts scene with Lightning in a Bottle 2011, the 10th evolution of their signature festival. The Los Angeles based company specializes in “creating experiences as art form” and has become a fixture at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival for the past seven years. While I unfortunately missed Coachella this year, I attended in 2009 and 2010 and The Do LaB installations were definitely a highlight of the festival experience.
ArtWalk 2011 – Experience the Miracle Mile Art Scene
With its many museums and art galleries, the Miracle Mile and surrounding mid-Wilshire neighborhood is one of several important centers of LA’s vibrant art scene. Home to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Architecture+Design Museum, and the Craft and Folk Art Museum, as well as numerous galleries, visitors to this part of the city can easily spend several days exploring the area’s wealth of art venues.
Celebrating Orphan Films: Bringing the Obscure to Light
We are very fortunate to live in a city that is home to some of the finest film preservation and screening organizations in the country. This month, two of these local film institutions, the UCLA Film & Television Archive and Los Angeles Filmforum, in cooperation with NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, present a program called Celebrating Orphan Films, an eclectic mix of screenings and discussions at the Billy Wilder Theater.
Neon Celebrate! Stamp Release Party
This weekend, The Museum of Neon Art (MONA) and the U.S. Postal Service are co-sponsoring a party to celebrate the release of the newest USPS first-class “forever” stamp, which is a tribute to neon. Designed by LA-based neon artist Michael Flechtner and USPS art director Phil Jordan, the stamp depicts the word “Celebrate” surrounded by brilliantly colored swirls, circles and dashes in pink, blue, orange, yellow and green.
