The Second Annual LA Zine Fest is Almost Here!

While the do-it-yourself zine culture has been active and publishing for decades, its growth and popularity have really blossomed during the past several years. A case in point is the LA Zine Fest, which launched last year with over 100 exhibitors and attracted approximately 1,500 attendees.

If you’re not familiar with zines, they are self-published, handmade publications that are typically produced in small quantities. They are also usually self-funded, eschew advertising and follow their own schedule. As Meredith Melnick in Time Magazine explained, “The editor of a traditional magazine or journal says “It’s time to publish, so what are we going to say?” The editor of a zine says, “I have something to say, so it’s time to publish.”

According to its organizers, the LA Zine Fest enables “…creators of independent publications to come together to share their work with each other and with the public at large.” What can you expect at LA Zine Fest this year? The list is impressive.
