Normally I wouldn\u2019t cover such an event, but in this case I want to let the Curating Los Angeles community know how much more preservation related information is now available online.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>After living with its previous site for 13 years, the Conservancy has greatly improved the way it presents information about important architectural and cultural resources found throughout greater Los Angeles. It has also made it much easier to learn about the organization\u2019s advocacy, education and outreach activities.<\/p>\n<p>I particularly like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laconservancy.org\/explore-la\/historic-places\" target=\"_blank\">interactive map<\/a>\u00a0of more than 400 historic places in Los Angeles County, which shows the location of each building in relation to others in the Conservancy&#8217;s database. Click on any site and up pops a photograph and brief written description. Want to learn more? Click on the building\u2019s name and you\u2019re taken to another page that provides a detailed description of the structure or place. After reviewing the seven search results, I selected the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laconservancy.org\/locations\/golden-state-mutual-life-insurance-building\" target=\"_blank\">Golden State Mutual Life Building<\/a>, since I had written about this structure and its wonderful murals in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.curatingla.com\/blog-index\/2011\/7\/18\/los-angeles-approves-historic-cultural-monument-1000.html\" target=\"_blank\">July 18, 2011 post<\/a>. I then followed a link to the details page, where I was presented with a large photo of the building\u2019s fa\u00e7ade, an overview of its history and background information about the ongoing legal dispute that surrounds the aforementioned murals. While the Conservancy\u2019s site doesn\u2019t provide much information about the murals themselves, you can see pictures of them on my blog post referred to above.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"600\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/curatingla.com\/cla\/2013\/07\/01\/the-los-angeles-conservancy-launches-a-new-website-and-historic-preservation-in-la-takes-a-big-step-forward\/pst_modernarchinla_logo\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/curatingla.com\/cla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/PST_ModernArchinLA_logo.jpg?fit=267%2C109&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"267,109\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"PST_ModernArchinLA_logo\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/curatingla.com\/cla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/PST_ModernArchinLA_logo.jpg?fit=267%2C109&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"size-full wp-image-600 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/curatingla.com\/cla\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/PST_ModernArchinLA_logo.jpg?resize=267%2C109&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"PST_ModernArchinLA_logo\" width=\"267\" height=\"109\" \/>Another of the new site\u2019s compelling features is the section dedicated to Modern architecture, which was developed as part of the Getty initiative,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificstandardtimepresents.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A.<\/a>\u00a0While you\u2019ll find information about some of the region\u2019s iconic Modern structures, it\u2019s real strength lies in its focuses on \u201c\u2026the hidden gems many of us don&#8217;t (yet) know about.\u201d One example \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.laconservancy.org\/issues\/la-villa-basque\" target=\"_blank\">La Villa Basque<\/a>, described as \u201cA unique landmark in the industrial city of Vernon for over half a century, its unique hybrid of coffee shop, lounge, fine dining establishment, and event space served everyone from truck drivers to wedding parties.\u201d I wasn\u2019t familiar with this building and was very disappointed to learn that the current owners have significantly altered its\u00a0&#8220;&#8230;remarkably intact Googie architecture and authentic sixties design.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the Conservancy has done a great job updating its web site, there are many ways to improve what you\u2019ll find today. I\u2019d love to see bios and photographs of the many architects found in the Conservancy\u2019s database. I\u2019d also appreciate more photos, as well as videos, of the buildings and historic places, as well as links to additional third party resources that further contextualize the database listings.<\/p>\n<p>According to Linda Dishman, the Conservancy\u2019s executive director, \u201cThis is just the beginning. We focused on launching with great content, of course, but also on creating a strong technical foundation that we can continue to build on.
