Partially designed by John Parkinson and Donald Parkinson, the station was built by the Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe railroads in the late 1930s at a cost of $11 million and became known as the last of the great stations in America.<\/p>\n<p>While Union Station has long served as the hub of the region\u2019s mass transit networks, that role has become increasingly important during the past several decades as the surrounding southern California counties have expanded rail, bus and shuttle services. This Fall, Metro kicked off a Master Plan project that looks to the future and will seek to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a great destination<\/li>\n<li>Celebrate the site\u2019s history<\/li>\n<li>Provide connectivity to adjacent neighborhoods<\/li>\n<li>Improve the Union Station passenger experience<\/li>\n<li>Prepare for High Speed Rail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To get the community involved in the project early on, Metro is holding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metro.net\/projects\/LA-union-station\/\" target=\"_blank\">public meeting<\/a> at its headquarters downtown.
