Adams Boulevard in the West Adams neighborhood, was designated Historic-Cultural Monument #1000.<\/p>\n<p>The six-story commercial building was completed in 1949 and designed in the Late Moderne style by native Angeleno <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulrwilliamsproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Paul R. Williams<\/a> (1894 &ndash; 1980). According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laconservancy.org\/issues\/issues_goldenstatemutual.php4\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Conservancy<\/a>, &ldquo;Williams became the first black architect admitted to the American Institute of Architects and one of Los Angeles&rsquo; most prominent architects of the twentieth century, with his office responsible for approximately 3,000 built projects.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"full-image-block ssNonEditable\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/cla\/legacy-images\/buildings\/GoldenStateMutualLifeBuilding.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1310884833074\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><span class=\"thumbnail-caption\" style=\"width: 563px;\">Photo by The City Project<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1925 by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Nickerson,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">William Nickerson, Jr.<\/a> (1879 &ndash; 1945), Golden State Mutual (GSM) served African-Americans who were denied coverage by other insurance companies due to racial discrimination. At the time it was established, GSM was the largest black-owned business west of the Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>While the building itself is historically significant, so too are the murals found in its lobby: &#8220;The Negro in California History&#8211;Settlement and Development&#8221; (1949) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aaregistry.org\/historic_events\/view\/five-decades-greatness-art-hale-woodruff\" target=\"_blank\">Hale Woodruff<\/a> and &#8220;The Negro in California History&#8211;Exploration and Colonization&#8221; (1949) by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dropbears.com\/a\/art\/biography\/Charles_Alston.html\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Alston<\/a>. These murals were commissioned by GSM and depict African American contributions to the history of California from 1781 through the founding of the company. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norman_O._Houston\" target=\"_blank\">Norman Houston<\/a> (1893 &ndash; 1981), who was GSM&rsquo;s first employee and later became its president, the murals were intended &#8220;&#8230;to instill in our young people the knowledge that they had a lot to do with the building of our state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"full-image-block ssNonEditable\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsmlife.com\/artcollection%205.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/cla\/legacy-images\/artistsphotographersfilmmakerswriters\/HaleWoodruffMural.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1310750811943\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/span><span class=\"thumbnail-caption\" style=\"width: 594px;\">Mural by Hale Woodruff via Golden State Mutual web site.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"full-image-block ssNonEditable\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gsmlife.com\/artcollection%205.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/cla\/legacy-images\/artistsphotographersfilmmakerswriters\/CharlesAlstonMural.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1310835453415\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/span><span class=\"thumbnail-caption\" style=\"width: 594px;\">Mural by Charles Alston via Golden State Mutual web site.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today, the fate of these impressive pieces of art is unclear. GSM has ceased operations and the building is now owned by Community Impact Development, a local non-profit social service organization.
