When I can indulge in that wonderful activity and support the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lapl.org\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Public Library<\/a> at the same time \u2013 all the better. So later today, I plan to continue reading <em>Paradise Reclaimed<\/em> by Nobel prize winning author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/nobel_prizes\/literature\/laureates\/1955\/laxness-bio.html\" target=\"_blank\">Halld\u00f3r Laxness<\/a> (1902 \u2013 1998).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never heard of that book or Laxness for that matter, you\u2019re not alone. I wasn\u2019t familiar with the author or his work until I stumbled upon it in a bookstore several years ago. I love when that happens!<\/p>\n<p><em>Paradise Reclaimed<\/em> is definitely one of the more unconventional novels I\u2019ve ever read \u2013 a book filled with irony, humor, compassion and stoicism set in 19<sup>th<\/sup> century Iceland and Utah. As Jane Smiley writes in the introduction, \u201cit is a strange and beautiful book, written by one of the twentieth centuries\u2019 most unusual, skilled, and visionary novelists.\u201d Check it out if you\u2019re so inclined, or perhaps take a look at his more famous novel titled <em>Independent People<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, it really doesn\u2019t matter what book you are going to read. The important thing is that you make the time to do it. So join other Angelenos in supporting the LA Public Library\u2019s cultural and educational programs by making a donation to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lfla.org\" target=\"_blank\">Library Foundation of Los Angeles<\/a> and enjoying a good read.
