National Park Week is Almost Here – It’s Time to Get Outdoors and Explore!

There are 397 national parks in the United States, which together consist of 84 million acres of spectacular scenery, historic landmarks and cultural treasures. Twenty-six of these parks are located in California and of those, five are in the southern part of the state.

Starting tomorrow, you have the opportunity to experience the beauty of these natural wonders without having to pay the normal park entrance fee. It’s all part of National Park Week, a nationwide celebration organized by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation.

Join NASA/JPL for the Last Total Lunar Eclipse Until 2014

The last total lunar eclipse until 2014 will take place the morning of December 10th. That’s tomorrow in case you lost track of the date! For those of us in the Los Angeles area, about half of the eclipse will be visible before sunrise.

According to the Griffith Park observatory, “you will want a view toward an unobstructed horizon facing west-northwest.” While the eclipse will technically begin at 3:33 a.m. pacific standard time, it will become most dramatic starting “…at 4:45 a.m., when the moon touches the umbra, the well defined, dark, inner shadow of the earth.”

Lightning in a Bottle 2011

Once again The Do LaB brings their creative energies to the southern California music and arts scene with Lightning in a Bottle 2011, the 10th evolution of their signature festival. The Los Angeles based company specializes in “creating experiences as art form” and has become a fixture at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival for the past seven years. While I unfortunately missed Coachella this year, I attended in 2009 and 2010 and The Do LaB installations were definitely a highlight of the festival experience.

Red Bull Soapbox Race – Downtown Los Angeles

This weekend, Red Bull will transform the streets of downtown LA into a drag strip for the Red Bull Soapbox Race. Approximately 40 teams of experienced racers and amateurs will compete in this non-motorized racing event, featuring outrageously designed, human-powered vehicles trying to beat the clock in a downhill competition.

LA River Day of Service

If you’re looking for a fun, family friendly outdoor activity that’s also an opportunity to do good in our community, I highly recommend the LA River Day of Service, organized by the City of Los Angeles and Friends of the Los Angeles River. You can volunteer to help remove trash at one of 14 sites along the 51 mile length of the river from the Valley to the Harbor.

The National Grilled Cheese Invitational Is Back!

If you’ve been following my posts throughout the week, you know that I’ve profiled several really great events happening around the LA area this weekend. One more I want to tell you about is the 2nd 8th Annual National Grilled Cheese Invitational (coming back for seconds?), where amateur and professional chefs compete side-by-side in a grilled cheese cook-off to become Grilled Cheese Champion.
