If you’ve been following my posts throughout the week, you know that I’ve profiled several really great events happening around the LA area this weekend. One more I want to tell you about is the 2nd 8th Annual National Grilled Cheese Invitational (coming back for seconds?), where amateur and professional chefs compete side-by-side in a grilled cheese cook-off to become Grilled Cheese Champion.
Brewery ArtWalk – Spring 2011
I always look forward to the Brewery ArtWalk, a twice annual open studio weekend held at what the organizers bill as the worlds largest art complex. Each time I’ve attended I have been exposed to new artists I was previously unfamiliar with, as well as had the opportunity to see the latest work by artists I was exposed to at previous open studio events.
CicLAvia – Rediscover LA in a Whole New Way
With Los Angeles expecting mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper sixties tomorrow, what better way to spend your Sunday than getting outdoors, connecting with the greater LA community and taking a break from the traffic related stress that so many of us experience everyday. You can do just that with thousands of other Angelenos by participating in CicLAvia, an event that “opens LA streets to pedestrians and bicyclists, creating a temporary web of public space on which residents of Los Angeles can walk, bike, socialize, celebrate and learn more about their own city.”
Walk, Eat, Learn – Getting to Know Old Pasadena with Melting Pot Tours
Recently some friends recommended the Old Pasadena Food Tasting Tour run by Melting Pot Tours. Since I love eating and neighborhood exploration, I decided to purchase two tickets for the Sunday, March 20, tour so my wife and I could become better acquainted with an area that we’ve enjoyed visiting over the years but didn’t really know very well.
Last Remaining Seats Turns 25
In 1987 the Los Angeles Conservancy began its program called Last Remaining Seats to focus attention on the movie palaces located in downtown Los Angeles’ Broadway Historic Theatre District. Now in its 25th season, the Conservancy’s highly successful series of classic films and live entertainment in historic theatres is back with an outstanding slate of films.
RedCat International Children’s Film Festival is Back!
REDCAT is the downtown outpost of CalArts and bills itself as “a center for experimentation, discovery and lively civic discourse.” Each year, the REDCAT team puts together an eclectic calendar of events that draw upon artistic talent from around the world.
Since it opened in 2003, I’ve enjoyed a number of films, performances, exhibitions and literary events at REDCAT, which is located in the Disney Concert Hall. One of my favorite events has been the family friendly International Children’s Film Festival, due to the quality and breadth of films. Given my past experience with this event, I have a lot of confidence that this year’s festival won’t disappoint.
Los Angeles “Water Writes” Mural Unveiling
Anyone living in southern California knows that access to water has long been a central issue that has defined the region’s development. Recognizing the importance of water related issues to southern California in general and the greater LA area in particular, the Estria Foundation selected Los Angeles as the site for the first of 10 Water Writes murals.
