Tour the Historic Capitol Records Studios in Hollywood

When I learned that Capitol Studios planned to celebrate its 60th anniversary by hosting tours of its historic facility, I immediately purchased a ticket. After all, this was my chance to get inside one of the most iconic mid-century modern buildings in Los Angeles.

The Capitol Studios occupy part of the Capitol Records tower, which was designed by LA-based architecture firm Welton Becket and Associates. The 13-story structure was completed in 1956 and, according to the Los Angeles Conservancy, “…is notable for its circular plan [the first of its kind] and ninety-foot aluminum spire with a beacon that blinks out H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D in Morse code.”

Capitol Records TowerWhile VIP tour tickets are all sold out, General Admission (GA) tickets are still available as of today. According to the Capitol Studios’ web site, “GA tickets include full studio tours of all the control rooms and live rooms, which will be filled with historical images of [their] Studio and Artists as well as live musicians. You will also have the chance to ask [their] staff questions about sessions that have happened at Capitol and about [their] history and gear.”

As an added bonus, people who purchase tour tickets will gain admission to the Los Angeles Record Fair (aka WAX Record Fair), which takes place in the Studios’ parking lot. The Wax Record Fair is billed as “…the first music industry event of its kind to focus on vinyl, music lifestyle goods, and record collecting culture.”

Proceeds from this event allow Capitol Studios to support music and education programs like Cal Arts and Grammy in the Schools.
