Songs in the Key of Los Angeles

2014SonginKeyofLA

There are many ways to learn about the history and culture of Los Angeles. One of the more interesting and unusual is through sheet music. What does that mean exactly? Enter “Songs in the Key of Los Angeles, a multi-platform collaboration between the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Public Library, and USC professor Josh Kun….” This unique endeavor mines the Library’s extraordinary Southern California Sheet Music Collection, which is comprised of works from the 1840s through the 1950s.

Starting today, Songs in the Key of Los Angeles brings a selection of this music to life through free recitals performed by artists from LA Opera and SongFest. If you want to be transported back in time and gain a new perspective on the political, social and artistic trends that helped shape Los Angeles from the mid 19th century through the middle of the 20th century, I think you’ll find this series of events well worth your while.
