Cinespia and the newly opened Ace Hotel in downtown LA are co-hosting a series of films in the recently rehabbed United Artists Theater (1927). To kick things off, they’ll present the Los Angeles premiere of Under the Skin (2014, 108 mins), the new sci-fi thriller starring Scarlett Johannsen that adapts Michel Faber’s 2000 novel about an extraterrestrial stalker. Director Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth) and composer Mica Levi will be present in-person to discuss the making of the film , which Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian calls “…visually stunning and deeply disturbing: very freaky, very scary and very erotic.”
While I’m really looking forward to seeing this film, I’m equally as excited to get inside the United Artists Theater, since it’s been closed to the public for many decades. Designed by architect C. Howard Crane and opened on December 26, 1927, the theater is distinguished by several notable features, such as murals depicting the original UA founders – Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith – and, according to the The Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation, “a fire curtain that bears an adaptation of the Shakespeare quote “The Picture’s The Thing,” implying the ultimate triumph of the motion picture over performing arts.” To learn more about his local architectural gem, visit the Los Angeles Conservancy web site.
