Curling up with a good book on a rainy evening is something I look forward to, particularly since we don’t have many opportunities to do that these days given California’s long running drought. When I can indulge in that wonderful activity and support the Los Angeles Public Library at the same time – all the better. So later today, I plan to continue reading Paradise Reclaimed by Nobel prize winning author Halldór Laxness (1902 – 1998).
If you’ve never heard of that book or Laxness for that matter, you’re not alone. I wasn’t familiar with the author or his work until I stumbled upon it in a bookstore several years ago. I love when that happens!
Paradise Reclaimed is definitely one of the more unconventional novels I’ve ever read – a book filled with irony, humor, compassion and stoicism set in 19th century Iceland and Utah. As Jane Smiley writes in the introduction, “it is a strange and beautiful book, written by one of the twentieth centuries’ most unusual, skilled, and visionary novelists.” Check it out if you’re so inclined, or perhaps take a look at his more famous novel titled Independent People.
In any case, it really doesn’t matter what book you are going to read. The important thing is that you make the time to do it. So join other Angelenos in supporting the LA Public Library’s cultural and educational programs by making a donation to the Library Foundation of Los Angeles and enjoying a good read. That’s a cause we can all get behind.
