A Cinefamily Valentine’s Day – Casablanca and My Mondo Valentine

There are many ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in LA. I wrote about two of them on my January 20 post, but if they didn’t interest you or you just want something different, perhaps you’ll find these two events to your liking.

The Cinefamily kicks off the evening with a special showing of Casablanca. If you’ve never seen it on a big screen, this is your chance.  As described on The Cinefamily web site, the experience of Casablanca is potently satisfying on enough different levels (comedic, philosophical, visual, verbal, political, musical, etc.) that it’s fair to call it one of the most absolutely romantic movies of all time. Its love triangle between the owner of the Moroccan nightclub for ex-pats (Humphrey Bogart), the dame who disappeared from his life once the Germans invaded Paris (the ravishing Ingrid Bergman) and her new resistance fighter flame (Paul Henreid) is so endearing that, like all great love songs, we must play it again!

Dir. Michael Curtiz, 1942, 35mm, 102 min.

The Cinefamily will follow-up the Casablanca screening with a totally different sort of Valentine’s Day program. This one is a mash up of sorts called My Mondo Valentine, which will include a variety of love-themed clips plumbed from the depths of impossibly rare film and video vaults. According to The Cinefamily, this mix will feature everything from misguided educational sex ed films to weirdly romantic TV ads, homemade atrocities to their favorite sleazy “how to score” films! The evening will conclude with a showing of the ‘70s movie-of-the-week romance Like Normal People, starring Linda Purl and Sean Cassidy.
