Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood

Monday, November 1st marks the premier of a new documentary on Turner Classic Movies called Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood. While I have not seen this seven part series myself, writer and producer Jon Wilkman is a highly regarded LA based documentary filmmaker who along with his wife, Nancy Wilkman, have produced a number of award winning films and written two excellent pictorial histories of Los Angeles, Picturing Los Angeles and Los Angeles: A Pictorial Celebration. You can find both books in the photography section of my online store – ShopLA

According to a review by Dorothy Rabinowitz in the Wall Street Journal, Wilkman’s latest documentary, narrated by Christopher Plummer, is “…complex, elegant and determined to leave out nothing of importance.” She goes on to say that the series “…covers broad chunks of 20th-century American history and society—and in so doing provides considerable support for the view that the movies are a history of America.”

Given my lifelong love of movies and Hollywood’s inextricable link to the development of Los Angeles, I look forward to tuning in and learning more about this fascinating subject.

  1. Turner Classic Movies is a joy to watch and I'm glad I have them as a choice for those old tv shows. Being that Christopher Plummer will be narrating I will have to check out Moguls & Movie Stars: A History of Hollywood. I can see I missed it for November, maybe it will run again on Turner. thanks for the superb article!
