Join NASA/JPL for the Last Total Lunar Eclipse Until 2014

The last total lunar eclipse until 2014 will take place the morning of December 10th. That’s tomorrow in case you lost track of the date! For those of us in the Los Angeles area, about half of the eclipse will be visible before sunrise.

According to the Griffith Park observatory, “you will want a view toward an unobstructed horizon facing west-northwest.” While the eclipse will technically begin at 3:33 a.m. pacific standard time, it will become most dramatic starting “…at 4:45 a.m., when the moon touches the umbra, the well defined, dark, inner shadow of the earth.”

Maps, Maps, Maps!!!

I recently found a great web site called the Big Map Blog that specializes in – you guessed it – maps. It’s run by Paul Fehler, a St. Louis, MO based documentary film producer and sign-maker who studied cartography and geographic information science in college and, not surprisingly, loves maps.

The Big Draw LA

During the month of October, Angelenos of all ages and artistic ability are encouraged to participate in The Big Draw LA, a city-wide celebration of drawing in all its forms. Inspired by the popular Big Draw event in London, The Big Draw LA seeks to expand the boundaries of drawing, experimenting not only with pencils, paint, charcoal, and digital imagery, but also with sand, clay, choreographed movement—anything that makes a mark!

Sometimes in what seems like a blink of an eye that familiar building that you passed on your way to work or school is gone, only to be replaced by a new structure, or worse – a parking lot. The same can be said for businesses, which come and go along our commercial corridors and shopping districts on a regular basis.

Los Angeles Design Festival Begins Today

Today marks the start of the Los Angeles Design Festival (LADF), which celebrates the greater LA region’s status as a global design capital. The LADF’s events, featuring local and international design talent, are located all over Los Angeles in venues that range from the Los Angeles Convention Center to small design showrooms.

JPL’s 2011 Open House

In early January I took a tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and wrote about my experience. At the end of that post, I encouraged others to visit the Lab because the tour provides an excellent overview of a fascinating facility that plays a central role in our space program as the leading US center for the robotic exploration of our solar system. Now you have a great opportunity to delve even deeper into the Lab’s work by attending its annual Open House, which takes place in just a few days.
