Now in its 22nd year, the LA Art Show is once again bringing its curatorial vision to downtown Los Angeles by highlighting the work of established and emerging artists from around the world. Utilizing 150,000 square feet of exhibition space at the L.A. Convention Center and expecting upwards of 70,000 attendees, this year the event is raising the bar once again with a diverse range of artist performances, lectures and an impressive list of international exhibitors.
Show Highlights
While reviewing the show’s promotional materials, a couple programmatic elements caught my eye. The first is the exciting array of performances and installations planned for the coming week. One example:

The Work
“The Cut-Outs installation piece, an 8 x 73 foot acrylic on cardboard mural, deals with scenes from Gomez’s West Hollywood neighborhood. Gardeners and pool cleaners tend to the outside, then the mural proceeds inside, depicting housekeepers cleaning the living room, dining room, the bathroom and finally, the bedroom. Playing with negative space and with perspective, Gomez has life-sized cardboard figures emerge from the body of the mural, standing alone in the space, confronting the viewer. The piece functions as a still-life of affluent Los Angeles.”
The show’s second noteworthy element is Littletopia, a “showcase for ascendant independent galleries” that shines a spotlight on emerging artistic voices. Participating galleries include:

Finally, I’m particularly excited that LA Art Show 2017 is thematically focused “…on Latin American and Latino art to coincide with The Getty’s upcoming Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles.” The last iteration of Pacific Standard Time was a phenomenally engaging experience and I eagerly await the Fall when the series of thematically linked exhibitions opens to the public.
