There are many ways to understand Los Angeles. One of my favorites is through photographs, which capture moments in time that tell stories about the built and natural environment and the people who make the city their home. For decades, the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) has collected millions of such images that date from the 1880s to the present. Over 100,000 of them are currently available on its website.
This weekend, a nonprofit organization called Photo Friends is co-hosting two events that are sure to excite L.A. history and photography lovers alike. I highly recommend both.
On the Go
Between 1959 and 1960, KNXT produced a television program called On the Go, hosted by Jack Linkletter. The human-interest show featured a number of notable guests, such as Vincent Price and William Castle. Linkletter also visited well-known Los Angeles area locations, such as the Hollywood Studio Club and Marineland.
Dan Einstein and Mark Quigley of the UCLA Film & Television Archive will screen clips from some recently preserved episodes of On the Go. They’ll also share information about the Archive’s important preservation work and explain how it supports researchers from around the world.

Photo Friends Rummage Sale
Photo Friends of the Los Angeles Public Library is hosting its first winter rummage sale. That means you can pick up a variety of exhibition prints (no originals) from the LAPL Photo Collection. The photographs cover a range of subjects, are of varying sizes and will cost between $5 and $25. Pretty reasonable – right?
Proceeds benefit Photo Friends, which works “to improve access to the [library’s] collections and promote them through programs, projects, and exhibits.” This is a cash & carry event, so hit the ATM before you arrive. You’ll apparently also find “…a bunch of other vintage stuff–super cheap and extremely cheerful!”
