Peter Wu: Rise of the Fly II

If you want to explore “the aesthetics of technology and processes of transformation and translation,” an approach rich with potential is to examine the two classic sci-fi horror films called “The Fly” (Kurt Neumann, 1958 and David Cronenberg, 1986). That’s precisely what artist Peter Wu (b. 1976, Windsor, Ontario) does in his new exhibition Rise of the Fly II, opening soon at the Vincent Price Art Museum.

Wu, who lives and works in Los Angeles, has created a multi-media experience utilizing production stills and video clips from those two movies, along with painting, “to develop his own iconographies….” By taking a non-linear approach to convey meaning, he “explores the possibilities of permutations between traditional media – film, video, installation, painting and sculpture – to compose works that generate a surreal, immersive adaptation to the original films.” What that means exactly isn’t entirely clear, but I like the idea behind this exhibition and look forward to experiencing it for myself.

Prelude Reign Fly

Prelude Reign Fly by Peter Wu.

As one might hope given that Rise of the Fly II incorporates portions of a film starring Vincent Price and is on display in his namesake museum, there will be a special screening of Kurt Neumann’s version of “The Fly” during the opening reception. Equally as exciting, Victoria Price, the actor’s daughter and biographer, will be on hand for the screening and will join artist Peter Wu in conversation about his work. Reserve your tickets while you can.
