My two boys recently learned about beekeeping at school. Now they’re trying to convince me and my wife to take the plunge and start producing honey in our backyard.
While the idea is intriguing, we don’t know the first thing about tending hives and harvesting honey. So I was very excited to learn that the Los Angeles Obscura Society andThe Velaslavasay Panorama are hosting beekeeper Max Wong for a discussion about urban beekeeping. Max is a member of The Backwards Beekeepers, an organic beekeeping club in Los Angeles, and owner of a backyard that is home to five hives, thousands of bees, and one turtle.

Wong will answer all of your bee-related questions, discuss why bees are vanishing, and share information about the legalization and legislation of bees. She will also have a demonstration hive with live bees on hand for this event.
If you do attend this event, be sure to spend time in The Velaslavasay Panorama’s beautiful garden. It’s full of small, intimate spaces where you can sit, relax and enjoy a wide variety of plants. I also highly recommend you experience the Effulgence of the North – described as “a panoramic exploration of the limitless horizon which lies beyond a frigid terrain, illuminated by the ethereal Aurora Borealis.” I spent about 20 minutes immersed in this wonderful, calming installation that masterfully melds sculpture, painting, light and music to great effect. It’s located in a darkened upstairs space that is reached by climbing a twisting staircase.
