This weekend Northeast LA is celebrating its history and diverse culture with music, dance, and poetry at the 7th Annual Lummis Day Festival. Named after Charles Fletcher Lummis (1859–1928), who was the Los Angeles Times’ first city editor, founder of the Southwest Museum, prolific author and historic preservation activist, among other distinctions, the festival is a tribute to its namesake’s embrace of multicultural inclusiveness, appreciation of history and the arts.
The multi-site event will take place at the Lummis House (aka El Alisal), built by Lummis himself from arroyo stone, and the Heritage Square Museum, which features eight historic Victorian era structures and explores the settlement and development of southern California from the late 19th Century into the early decades of the 20th Century.
The festival kicks off at the Lummis House with poetry readings by Suzanne Lummis, granddaughter of Charles Lummis, Mary Fitzpatrick, Judith Pacht, Katie Ferris, Ilya Kaminsky and Hector Tobar. A group art exhibition then follows.
Running concurrently with the art show is a series of performances on three stages at the nearby Heritage Square Museum. Entertainment will include theater groups, dancers, puppeteers and a wide range of musicians and bands, such as Taiwanese pop/rock band Dzian, Latin groups Conjunto Los Pochos and Orquesta Charangoa, Old-Time trio Triple Chicken Foot, and hip hop artist Maya Jupiter.
Come celebrate the spirit and diverse culture of LA’s northeast neighborhoods. Admission to all events is free and families will find plenty of activities for all ages!
