Pacific Standard Light: Lawrence Weschler Revisits the Uncanny Light of L.A. with Photographers Mike Light and Mike Slack

Southern California’s natural beauty, varied geography and unique quality of light have long played muse to countless artists and photographers. On Tuesday evening, November 29 author and critic Lawrence Weschler, one of the most perceptive observers of the Los Angeles art scene, will lead a discussion “about Southern California’s blasting and wondrous light…” with Mike Light and Mike Slack, two photographers and bookmakers who have turned their cameras on Los Angeles and produced some truly captivating images.

According to ARTBOOK, which is co-sponsoring the event with Book Soup, “Weschler will discuss his new book, Uncanny Valley: Adventures in the Narrative, in relation to Light and Slack’s Los Angeles imagery. Light will present aerial photographs of the city–in bright daylight and electrified darkness–from his new book, LA Day/LA Night. Slack will show his classic Polaroids of the west, along with a preview of some new digital work.”

I had an opportunity to preview Light’s latest book at Photo LA and found myself enthralled by the finely rendered black and white images of Los Angeles. I wrote about my impressions in an April 2011 post. I have since purchased a copy for myself and count it as one of my favorite photography books.

While I’m not as familiar with Slack’s work, I spent some time looking at a selection of his photographs prior to writing up this post and am drawn to his Polaroid aesthetic, composition and storytelling. I look forward to learning more about this local photographer.

A reception and book signing with all of the panelists will follow the discussion.
