Eames: The Architect and the Painter

The legendary design team of Charles and Ray Eames is commonly associated with classic mid-century modern furniture produced using innovative production methods and materials such as molded plywood, fiberglass, plastic resin and wire mesh. What many don’t realize, however, is the breadth of their creative passions and the degree to which their personal lives and influence left an indelible mark on so many other design disciplines.

Filmmakers Jason Cohn and Bill Jersey seek to deepen our understanding of Charles and Ray Eames and the Los Angeles based “Renaissance studio” that they created and led for 40 years through their new film titled EAMES: The Architect and the Painter. Narrated by James Franco, the documentary explores their marriage and working relationship, as well as the hyper-creative environment that characterized “The Eamery.”

While EAMES: The Architect and the Painter was produced for PBS and will air on American Masters on December 19th, First Run Features is giving the film a theatrical release in the United States. Here in Los Angeles, we can thank Laemmle Theaters for picking up the documentary. Hopefully this added exposure will bring the Eames’s story to a broader audience.

To learn what motivated filmmaker Jason Cohn to tell this story and understand what he discovered about the Eames’s from the process, you can read the interview I conducted with him this past February. Part One of the interview is found here and Part Two here.
