de Lab Presents: Making Place at LACE

If you haven’t noticed by now, I am very interested in architecture, urban design and city planning. I get excited investigating how the built environment changes over time and impacts the people who live in neighborhoods and cities. I love meeting architects who are working to transform or re-imagine existing buildings and the urban fabric, as well as design entirely new structures that can elevate and inspire our daily existence and connect us more fully with the world around us. I also appreciate experiencing how design can influence the way I interact with others around me and with the environment itself.

It should therefore come as no surprise that I am drawn to organizations and events that focus on these disciplines and bring together people with similar interests. Enter de Lab (that’s: design east of La Brea), which bills itself as “a semi-regular gathering of Los Angeles design professionals living, working, and experimenting east of La Brea.”

This Thursday, de LaB celebrates and discusses Making Place, Painted Over/Under: Part 3, an exhibition curated by their newest host, Erin Cullerton of Design Agency Co. Featuring work by architecture firms Predock_Frane Architects, Chee Salette Architecture Office, and Florencia Pita mod, Making Place is the architecture-inspired section of a four part, yearlong exhibition conceptualized by artist Kim Schoenstadt.

Part 3 attempts to reveal the complex essence of Los Angeles by showcasing two-dimensional, abstracted vignettes of the cityscape as both an exercise in artful placemaking and a response to the powerful imagery of forgotten urban landscapes. It also explores the myriad ways Los Angeles has layered itself into a complex network of activity – at once dense and urbanistically challenged – that defies its semi-arid condition.

Conversations on Making Place will explore the exhibition’s themes while broadly looking at the ways thoughtful placemaking has shaped the city of Los Angeles. The panel features Erin Cullerton, John Frane, Hadrian Predock, Marc Salette, and Florencia Pita and is moderated by KCRW’s Frances Anderton. The event is sponsored by AIA Los Angeles and FORM Magazine.
